Gurjaani


Gurjaani is located on the right bank of the Alazani River, along its middle reaches. The micro-zone stretches from the foot of the wooded north-eastern slopes of the Tsiv-Gombori Mountain Range to the low-lying ground along the banks of the Alazani and comprises the Inner Kakhetian villages of Bakurtsikhe, Kolagi, Vedjini, Dzirkoki, Chandari, the town of Gurjaani itself, Chumlaki, Shashiani, Kalauri and Vachnadziani. The vineyards are planted over an area of 1152 ha. Common grape varieties inclide Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane Kakhuri and Saperavi. Gurjaani PDO wines were first produced in 1943, from the Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane Kakhuri varieties. Gurjaani wine is full-bodied and pale straw-yellow, with tones of ripe fruit and plants.
